William Shakespeare is a widely regarded writer and the greatest playwright in the English language. Romeo and Juliet is one of his most famous comedies, the story of two star-crossed lovers who die due to the feud between the two families. The balcony scene in Act 2 Scene 2 is also known as one of the most recognizable and memorable scenes in all of literature. After Romeo and Juliet meet at the Capulet ball, they instantly fall in love. Romeo later hides in the Capulets' orchard and hears Juliet express her emotions, discovers her love for him. Juliet does not know that Romeo is listening to her until he speaks out loud, no one knows that the two lovers meet. This scene connects two major plot events in which Romeo and Juliet exchange vows and confess their love to each other and foreshadows the rush with Romeo and Juliet's relationship to come. In this scene the obstacles that the two lovers must face begin. The atmosphere is sneaky, romantic and curious, leaving the audience in suspense, nervous but excited. The mood is created when Romeo describes Juliet's beauty. The point of view in Romeo and Juliet is written in the first person. The audience and readers had an idea of the character's thoughts, they knew everything that happened. Shakespeare used figures of speech and imagery to make readers appreciate and imagine the work. An example of personification: "Her vestal livery is but sickly and green" (Shakespeare) when Romeo compares Juliet's beauty to the sun and says that the moon (representing darkness) seems sickly and green because he is jealous of her . An example of a metaphor: “But, soft! What light breaks through that window? (Shakespeare) Romeo says this phrase when he sees Juliet at his window. “It is the east,... in the center of the card... an immature and infatuated young man, in love. Romeo's obsessive love for Juliet brought him to Juliet's house, listening to her and watching her. He knew he might get in trouble, yet he still went to see her despite the consequences he would face if anyone found out; which shows that he is also a fearless and courageous rebel who took risks. Romeo is also desperate, emotional and impatient; he would do anything to be with Juliet. Juliet is described as an angel from heaven, a beautiful girl of whom everyone and everything, even the moon, was jealous. The balcony scene in Act 2, Scene 2 is the most famous excerpt from Romeo and Juliet. Shakespeare wrote this passage using imagery, figures of speech, with a romantic mood, describing the characters Romeo and Juliet. This excerpt is my favorite of the entire play because of the beautiful and romantic atmosphere and the words that Romeo says.
