Drink driving: the effects on crime and society Over the last century, drunk driving has caused many problems for crime and society in the United States and throughout the United States. in the world. According to Utah State statute, driving under the influence is defined as “a person operating a motor vehicle who has been drinking and has a greater amount of alcohol in his or her system than can be detected by a blood test or from a breath test of 0.08". or higher at the time of testing (Wormdahl, 2012).” However, in the state of Utah, being under the influence of any type of controlled substance that prevents the driver from properly operating the vehicle is also included (Wormdahl, 2012). In the United States, the legal drinking age is twenty-one. According to the North Carolina Department of Public Safety (2009b) the limit for drunk driving varies depending on the type of vehicle: if it is a marketed vehicle the legal limit is 0.04 and if the driver has less than twenty-one years old nothing higher than .00, the license must be revoked for thirty days. One thing that's different about drunk driving, which differs from all other traffic offenses, is that DUIs can happen anywhere, such as in parking lots, or even setting up in your own driveway can result in receiving a DUI charge ( Wormdahl, 2012). There are two different terms that can be used to describe someone who is impaired or under the influence and they are impaired driving and driving under the influence. In 1983, the state of North Carolina imposed the North Carolina Safe Road Act, which eliminated all alcohol and drug-while-driving laws and combined them into what is now known as DWI, or Driving While Impaired.
