In the novel The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, there are many important themes in the eyes of Dr. TJ Eckleburg. The billboard was built to advertise the business of an eye doctor, symbolizing the growth of commercialism in America. The eyes watch the main characters as they pass the billboard on their way to New York City, almost like a divine figure. At the beginning of the novel we see the setting described as a gray and terrible land. As Dr. TJ Eckleburg's eyes appear over the hills, people notice the billboard with a colorful blue background and large eyes that give the feeling of a divine figure in the heavens. As the eyes look down, they also see all the lost morals and contemptuous actions that people do, thus symbolizing the corruption of people. At first we only see a billboard, but towards the end the eyes mean so much more. Life in 1920s America is all about making money and being successful. Success at this time was ranked by a man's worth. It didn't matter what you were like as a person, as long as you had a significant amount of money. The billboard, like religious views in America, is overlooked. Pre-WWI morality has somehow completely disappeared in the East, giving the impression that God has neglected America, with which Nick decides to reconnect, setting off with Dr. T. J. Eckleburg astern to look at the people who have abandoned their religious views to realize their goal of wealth. The setting in the novel is described as a very dark and sad place. When the eyes appear on the horizon, you notice the bright blue color of the billboard and the big eyes of Dr. TJ Eckleburg, which give the feeling of the sky and him... in the center of the card... It's time for them to find out that Wilson is planning to move Myrtle west as soon as he discovers her disloyalty. On their trip home from New York, Gatsby and Daisy meet Myrtle. Tom concludes that Gatsby was the one driving and Gatsby confesses, even though it was Daisy. Dr. TJ Eckleburg polices this and many other issues, showing society's corruption and carelessness. The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald is an extremely symbolic book with many different symbols, however Dr. TJ Eckleburg's eyes are the most symbolic element. F. Scott Fitzgerald never emphasizes what the eyes symbolize, however, throughout the novel, he suggests that the eyes have a different meaning for everyone and have many different incarnations. The eyes embody the growth of consumerism, God, and show the corruption of people along with their recklessness.
