Women against societyWomen all over the world in today's society still face difficulties in surviving. While for some women it is easy, for others it is also not possible to speak until you speak. A woman has a mind to achieve great things. Because they should be judged based on their appearance, whether they are beautiful or unattractive. “If you want something, ask a man; if you want something done, ask a woman” Margaret Thatcher, A Life. Women are just as strong as a man and in some cases even stronger. In the novels The Handmaid's Tale by Margret Atwood and Veil of Roses by Laura Fitzgerald, women are mistreated; they are judged just because they are “women”. The Handmaid's Tale describes women as servants, they are known as the Handmaids. Their job is to reproduce for their commanders and their wives, after giving birth to a man; they are forced to give birth to another who becomes a role in their life. The Veil of Roses is about women in Iran, women forced into religion in the Islamic Republic. Women are told what to do, how to dress, who to talk to, and who to marry. They have no say in their own lives. Although The Handmaid's Tale and The Veil of Roses are both fictional novels, similar events are happening in our society. Both novels vividly highlight three important themes: escape, love, and freedom. Each theme informs us about women and their struggles and how their daily lives are affected. All of these are important to oppressed women. Both the novels The Handmaid's Tale and The Veil of Roses are comparable to the theme of escape. In the novel The Handmaids Tale every handmaid dresses in red, the wives of the commanders dress in blue and the servants dress in green, each color identifies these women for what they are: this makes it difficult to escape. "Ordinary... middle of paper... they waited all their lives: freedom. Although perhaps it was not easy for them considering their hostile situation, both managed to overcome the difficulties that society threw at them , achieving the desired freedom. To sum up, both the novel The Handmaid's Tale and Veil of Roses are comparable to similar themes of escape, love and freedom and The Handmaid's Tale and Veil of Roses both remind us of what the women treated in the society. This shows that no matter how powerful women may feel in today's society, there are other people who still pray and fight for their lives every day a matter of struggle, which can be very pessimistic for every woman "The best it never means better for all... it always means worse for some."(244)― Margaret Atwood, The Handmaid's Tale.
