Reason no. 1: Efficiency The city's water resources, being a river, a groundwater table and a reservoir, are prone to containing dangerous pathogens that are harmful to anyone who consumes the system's water. Chlorination in water treatment is a common practice used to disinfect water from disease, however, it is known that when microbes attach to or are within water particles, they are protected by chlorine treatments. An alternative solution to chlorine is chloramine. Chloramine is the addition of ammonia to the chlorine compound. Once chloramine comes into contact with water it is called monochloramine. According to Gerstein (page 719. 1931) and Holwerda (page 719.1928) the germicidal properties were lower when ammonia was present in chloramine. Monochloramine lasts much longer in water than chlorine, therefore protecting the water from disease for a longer period of time. The water supply network is made up of numerous pipes that potentially carry diseases within them. This means that once the water, containing chloramine, reaches the pipes, the treated water is still protected from diseases such as Leg...
