All Quiet on the Western Front is a war story featuring a young man serving in the First World War. He describes what he had witnessed during his part of the time spent there and what happened around him. The author's purpose in writing this book is to inform readers of the difficulties and miseries of the First World War. It attempts to inform readers of what life was like at that time for the men who served as soldiers during the war. Erich Remarque, the author, provides a great deal of detail and stories to describe the sufferings and miseries of the journey. He does a great job of getting his point across to enlighten readers about it. The historical context of this book is the First World War in Germany. Many people describe the book as "The greatest war novel of all time", so it did a great job of describing the war. The book begins by talking about how they all went to school together. It introduces all the characters and describes what everyone is like. The characters in this book learn to cope with cold nights and growling stomachs. Some soldiers secretly went out and took some hay to cover themselves with during the night. (Page 40) In this period of their lives they didn't think twice about asking a dying person for their things, if they could be useful to them. Kat's friend Kemmerich had his leg amputated and died later, but once, when Kat and Kropp came to visit him, another man, Muller asked for his boots. Kemmerich didn't know that his leg had been amputated or that he was dying, so he didn't want to give it up. Shortly before he died, he told Kat to take the boots and give them to Muller (Page 28). After Remarque wrote more books about wartime, he wrote about war because he was once a soldier, so he knew what soldiers went through and could speak from experience. At first he couldn't find anyone to publish it for him, but eventually he found a publisher and published it. Erich Remarque lived from 1898 to 1970 and was a soldier in the First World War. He was wounded five times and the last one was serious. This book made him famous and rich at the age of 33. He knew how to describe war, so people who read him could imagine the horrors he saw. He didn't go into detail about some of the things he wrote about, because I'm sure it was difficult for him to talk about. This book was his most famous writing and is still famous today. This book changed his life a lot and he moved to America right before he died 1970.
