When 1937 arrived, Japanese soldiers raided the Chinese capital of Nanjing and began killing citizens en masse. A single leader of the Imperial Japanese Army was nonexistent. There were many people in power, such as generals, who allowed these behaviors to occur. Baron Koki Hirota, Foreign Minister at the time, did nothing despite being well aware of the Japanese persecution of the Chinese. These unsympathetic killings of what were thought to be Chinese soldiers as well as women, children and the elderly. This massacre lasted between 1937 and 1938. During this period, 300,000 Chinese citizens were brutally killed. This genocide is called the Rape of Nanjing because he raped the woman before killing her.
