History of Jamaica: Jamaica's history is rich and vibrant which inspires them to move forward as a nation. The original inhabitants of Jamaica are believed to be the Arawaks, also called Tainos. The Arawaks came from South America 2,500 years ago and called its island Xaymaca which meant "land of wood and water". The Arawaks are simple people by nature. Arawaks were light brown, short and well-formed with coarse black hair. Their faces were broad and noses were flat. They grew cassava, sweet potatoes, corn, fruits, vegetables and cotton. They would build their villages all over the island. Some of them would build them near rivers so they could catch fish. The Arawaks led a quiet and peaceful life until they were destroyed by the Spanish a few years after Christopher Columbus discovered the island in 1494.
