Soma relieves you of any anxiety, negativity, or emotions other than happiness. It's the way people get paid to go to work: the lower class gets less and the higher class gets bigger portions. They are conditioned to believe that “One cubic centimeter cures ten dark feelings” (Huxley 60). Soma has no side effects that make it harmful to society because it is used so much. It is similar to the antidepressants and medications we have today, except it has no side effects. Drugs are used to escape or relieve the pressures of life. The technology of producing drugs with external effects and promoting them harms society. With similar drugs such as antidepressants are becoming too easily available. “The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) has recommended that antidepressants should not be used for the initial treatment of mild depression because they say the risk-benefit ratio is poor.” (Donnellan). There are many benefits to these drugs, such as having a stress-free or happy day, but when they are readily available people become dependent on them when they don't need them.
