If torture is truly the only way to reach depraved, twisted and broken minds, then why not use it everywhere? For people who are parents or legal guardians of people with autism and developmental delays, treating and managing their symptoms can be a daunting task. Places like The Judge Rotenberg Center (JRC, originally founded as the Behavior Research Institute) Located in Canton, is a residential facility that uses behavioral treatments, methodologies, and educational services to work with children and adults with severe developmental disabilities and emotional or behavioral disorders . They reward good behavior with privileges and help find a job. But one wrong step and you will be treated like a terrorist. In 2002, an autistic student named Andre McCollins who attended the JRC was tied up and subjected to electric shocks for hours, leaving him with permanent burns and brain damage. All because Andre refused to take off his jacket. All JRC students are required to wear a graduated electronic decelerator at all times so they can deliver JRC-administered shocks whenever they believe a student has done something wrong, similar to an electric dog collar. Staff were asked to shock students for behaviors such as rocking back and forth, distracting attention, closing their eyes or tearing up a paper cup. 8. The JRC and the CIA have a long documented history of abuse. The United Nations investigated the school and called their practices “torture.” JRC founder Dr. Matthew Israel resigned after being accused of misleading a grand jury by destroying footage of shocked students. Even now the CIA is being persecuted to address its crimes against humanity and violations of laws prohibiting torture. Going so far as to “mistakenly” destroy the only copy of the Senate committee report and hacking into the computers overseeing the trial
