In 1991, Saddam Hussein decided to declare a massive aggression on the countries neighboring Iraq. The hardest hit country was Kuwait. Due to the nature of their ties to the United States, Iraq had a well-organized and equipped military that was capable of causing massive instability in Kuwait. The United States could not allow this to happen due to Kuwait's importance to the United States. Kuwait and the United States were heavily involved in the oil business, Kuwait being one of the world's largest oil suppliers to the United States. Saddam Hussein's aggression against Kuwait also posed a grave threat to other Arab nations in the region that had established trade ties with the United States. The involvement of the United States in this aggression became the first major difficult situation that President Bush had to face regarding politics and foreign relations. The United States could not allow Saddam to take control of the Arab nations as this would pose a grave threat to the United States' oil supply. Furthermore, Iraq would control more than 20% of the world's major oil supplies. Consequently, President Bush responded to the Iraqi despot's power play with Kuwait to mobilize a global coalition with Arab nations in “Operation Desert Storm” that repelled Saddam Hussein's aggression in 1991 (Crab and Mulcahy 255) . US involvement through Operation Desert Storm ensured that Saddam Hussein's dictatorship in Iraq would be limited to Iraq. It also aimed to ensure that the well-being of the Arab nations was taken care of. This operation saw the release of over 400,000 military personnel into Saudi Arabia. Through the United Nations Security Council, the United States was able to seek the support of other countries to improve the formulation of effective policies to keep Saddam Hussein's aggression at bay. ...... middle of paper ...... for a global leader, he has his share of internal problems, especially in government.
