Topic > It is commonly believed that it decreases with age, however this is a mistaken belief. Some might argue that there are various cognitive processes associated with changes in the brain that deteriorate over time, however there are also other areas of the brain that increase their activity in older age. I believe that a person's ability to perform certain tasks may slow down as they age, but that does not automatically mean they are becoming less cognitively intelligent. There are numerous ways intelligence can be defined, although it is commonly defined as general cognitive ability, meaning it is a mental ability involved in the ability to learn, reason, perceive relationships and analogies, understand facts, meanings, etc. . (Dictionary definition). However, as Raymond Cattell (1963) described, “intelligence generally does not consist of cognitive performance alone.” Cattell and Horns' (1966) theory emphasizes that intelligence is composed of a number of different abilities that are interrelated to form the broad term intelligence. The two main factors are fluid and crystallized intelligence. According to Cattell (1963) and agreed by Horn and Cattell (1966), the evidence that initiates this type of thinking is based on the difference between fluid and crystallized intelligence. In today's world, as a person ages, their fluid intelligence abilities slow down and lead to the development of such assumptions. However, like this gap between young and old, crystallized intelligence works in much the same way, except in reverse, with the older generation having more crystallized intelligence than the younger ones. Fluid intelligence refers to the ability to think and reason theoretically. This also includes...... middle of paper...... me but due to factors such as inappropriate retrieval signal can make it difficult to remember memories. (Reference need) In saying this there are factors that can contribute to a decline in intelligence such as medications you may be taking, an accident such as a car accident (can cause amnesia), or an illness (e.g. dementia). Dementia is a term to describe a variety of symptoms of a large group of neurodegenerative diseases or disorders that cause a progressive decline in a person's mental functioning. Dementia can cause severe loss of mental capacity, including memory loss, decline in intellectual abilities, poor judgment, poor social skills, and abnormal emotional reactions. Although it may be more common among older people, this is not a normal part of the aging process and many people do not develop this disease (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, 2013).
