For more than two thousand years, the human race has struggled to effectively establish the basis of morality. Society has made little progress in distinguishing between morally right and wrong. Even the most intellectual minds cannot distinguish the fundamental principles of morality. A consensus on morality is far from being reached. The struggle to create a base resulted in a vigorous war, full of disagreements and disputes. Despite the lack of understanding, John Stuart Mill firmly believes that truths can still have meaning even if society struggles to understand their principles. Mill does an exceptional job in describing morality and for this reason the entire essay is a masterpiece. His claims in the essay couldn't be closer to the truth. Morality is a topic that is often talked about, but what is morality? Not everyone is instilled with the same morals, so who is morally right? Morality is an extremely difficult subject to understand, which is why there is no fixed basis for it. What many may accept as morally right, others may consider morally wrong. Parents, media and teachers influence many of us, but who's to say that they themselves are right? I constantly question society, but allow others to express their opinions freely. Who am I to judge when no true consensus on morality has been reached? On August 6, 1945, the United States was the first to unleash nuclear war, instantly killing 80,000 God's lives. Many staunchly defend the decision and believe that the decline was necessary and inevitable. I myself hear the endless list of reasons, but ignore them all. Despite the billions spent by the United States to create the bomb and save the soldiers' lives, neither... half of the paper... is unrecognizable to the eye. The standard he is referring to is the utility principle, also called the “greatest happiness principle”. Mill makes it clear that utilitarianism had a great impact in shaping a moral basis of principles. From top to bottom, John Stuart Mill published an incredible essay describing the various unknown complexities of morality. He has a remarkable understanding and appreciation of utilitarianism and through the essay the audience can grasp a clearer understanding of morality. Morality itself may never be fully defined, but despite the struggle and lack of definition it still has meaning. Moral instinct comes differently to everyone, making it incredibly difficult to discover a basis of morality. Society may never actually establish the foundation, but Mill's essay gives people a good idea.
