The research paper will deal with the discussion of Gothic architecture in Europe i.e. England, France, Germany and Italy from 12th to 16th century. Architecture was the most original and enduring art form of the Gothic period, which lasted four centuries from the mid-12th century. The impetus for this architecture was the Roman Catholic Church, which sought to portray its places of worship as something that transcended the realm of humanity. Interestingly, many areas of Northern Europe were predominantly pagan and have only recently been brought into the Church. The image provided by the Gothic structural design was something these people could understand more easily, as they regularly used symbols in their pagan worship. These cathedrals were intended to inspire awe and reverence in those who entered them, and for the average person of the Gothic period these structures produced an intense experience. Evolved from Romanesque, Gothic was a more eclectic application of architecture. The decline and subsequent fall of the Roman Empire had left a void in Western Europe, and for the first 500 years after the fall there was anarchy and chaos. This period is often referred to as the “Dark Ages,” as indeed they were. Around 1100 AD, the Catholic Church began to spread across Western Europe. A remnant of the Roman Empire, the Catholic Church became entwined in nearly every aspect of Western European society. At its height, the Pope's authority surpassed monarchies, and the Church began to align power to manage Western European civilization using religion as a code.
