Technological change has influenced women's roles and ideas about gender roles. Women have undoubtedly come a long way in improving numbers and increasing percentages in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) workforce, but statistics say the numbers are still lower than those of men. Women have struggled from an early age trying to advance in knowledge, however, for some of them established gender roles have not allowed them to continue their education. Many people think that there were no female scientists and engineers until early modern times, but in reality women have participated in these fields of study for over 3,000 years.
