Slavery in the Roman PublicAccording to Marvin Perry, "slavery was practiced in ancient times, in many countries, and among most people." (Perry, 112) Especially in ancient Rome, when Roman armies successfully expanded into other countries and areas, they captured people during battle and sent back to Rome to be sold to wealthy Romans as their slaves. During the last centuries of the Republic and the first centuries of the Imperial age, Roman warfare brought back an enormous quantity of slaves as war booty. Slaves were legally considered property with no freedom of their own. In ancient Rome, people called their slaves "talking instruments." Slaves were not treated as human beings with legal citizenship rights. Sold as products on the market and priced based on their demographic characteristics including age, gender, personal abilities, ethnicity, mannerisms, appearance and personality. The lives of slaves are conspicuously harsh due to hard work and cruel torture at the hands of their reckless masters. The more brutal the oppression of the masters, the more intense the revolt of the slaves, and finally causes the massive revolt in Roman times. The Pseudolus was written by Titus Maccius Plautus, a Roman playwright, who wrote at the time of the end of the Second Punic War. The play told the story of how a slave helped his master solve the problem in ancient Rome. The main character of Pseudolus is Pseudolus, and he was the slave of his master Simo. One day he discovered that Calidorus, his master's son, was depressed because of Calidorus' beloved slave, Phoenicius, who was sold to a Macedonian military officer by her master Ballio, a pimp. However, the transaction had not yet been completed. Calidoro was so shocked and saddened because... middle of paper... Calidoro's little power. He relied completely on his slaves Pseudolus because he was unable to negotiate with Ballio and convince his father to pay for Phoenicium. He then asked Pseudolus about the plans and suggestions. Plautus tired of telling the public that not all the upper classes were considered powerful and exceptional people. Therefore, the evaluation of a person cannot be based on social class. By writing the work of Pseudolus and modeling the different personalities of the characters in the work, Plautus criticized the current social situation regarding the inhumanity of the treatment of slavery. At the same time, he attempted to convey an attitude that class consciousness and social status were less important than good humanity and good characteristics, and encouraged society to pay more attention to the development of humanity, instead of simply focusing on wealth and social position..
