The adrenal gland (adrenal gland) is located at the top of each kidney; therefore every person has two adrenal glands. The adrenal glands look like triangular-shaped objects on top of the kidneys. The adrenal glands are busy creating several hormones necessary for a fully functional body. Each adrenal gland is made up of two different sections. The first section is the adrenal cortex and is located in the external region of the adrenal gland; the second section called the adrenal medulla and which is located in the internal region of the adrenal gland. Both sections of the adrenal glands, the adrenal cortex and the adrenal medulla, perform distinct and separate functions. The adrenal cortex, the outer region of the adrenal gland, secretes several hormones responsible for the body's metabolism, chemicals in the blood, and several bodily characteristics. One element of hormones is corticosteroids, and a part of them is hydrocortisone, also known as cortisol. Cortisol is the hormone that helps control the body's use of fats, proteins and carbohydrates. The pituitary gland is a pea-sized gland located in the center of the skull. The pituitary gland is an extremely important link between the nervous and endocrine systems. The pituitary gland regulates the amount of cortisol released by the adrenal glands. Cortisol's role in the body is extensive, cortisol helps the body manage stress, reduces inflammation, immune system function and allows for homeostasis within the body, providing balance in a myriad of different ways. A hormone called aldosterone regulates the level of sodium and potassium in the body to maintain blood volume as it changes. Describing the adrenal glands in the endocrine system is no easy feat, there are so many different aspects to think about and take into consideration. The adrenal glands control almost all hormonal stimulation and regulation, and coordinate with the entire body, which is how the endocrine system provides homeostasis to the body.
