Iago is a manipulative and vengeful character who weaves a web of deception by playing on the weaknesses of others. Stuart Burge's film Othello is an adaptation of the original play written by William Shakespeare. Shakespeare describes Iago as a cunning manipulative character. Burge attempted to portray Iago's deceitful nature on several occasions. This character is strongly represented in Othello and creates the underlying plot. Iago seeks revenge, as he does not receive the promotion he sought. He then plays on the weaknesses of others using manipulation and deception. Burge strongly emphasized the persona of Iago in the extract. For example, when Iago arrives on the shore, Burge purposely caused a storm to break out, when Othello arrives, however, the storm stops. This symbolism connects to the chaos that Iago brings to Cyprus and how his manipulation and deception will bring stormy days. Another symbolism of Iago's character is that when he wears his clothes they are dark green and black while Othello's are white and luxurious. This is not just a comment on their wealth but on their personality. From this we see that Iago is a darker and more mysterious man. Burge also successfully gave us a subjective point of view on almost every character in that short excerpt. He brought out an emotion in the character in just a few minutes. During filming the actor expressed the emotion of being jealous of Cassio and manipulative of Roderigo. Burge did this to make us form an opinion about Iago and his manipulative ways. Shortly after his arrival Iago stands aside intently watching Cassio and Desdomona interact. Iago begins to make judgments and inferences about how affectionate Cassio is towards Desdomona. He makes observations such as: “We… in the middle of the paper… remove Cassius from the position of lieutenant to receive the commission himself. Iago once again plays on a character's weakness. In conclusion from the evidence provided it is clear that Iago is a manipulative and vindictive character who weaves a web of deception by playing on the weakness of others. Stuart Burge has successfully attempted to portray this character in his deceptive nature. He managed to do this by using a significant amount of visual and cinematic techniques. The excerpt shows Iago weaving his web of deception on Othello, Roderigo, Cassio, and Desdomona in order to progress and finally receive the promotion he believed he deserved. Burge has in fact played Iago in the form in which Shakespeare originally created the character and must successfully create a devious villain in a similar way to how Shakespeare created him in the original play..
