Topic > Comparison: Airborne Event and The Liberation of Aunt...

The artist Fred Tomaselli organized an assortment of objects “Airborne Event” in 2003, and the talented Bettye Saar, “The Liberation of Aunt Jemima” in 1972 I will compare these two pieces. This essay will consist of explaining each artwork and comparing each piece in my opinion. American artist Fred Tomaselli arranges pills, leaves, insects, and cutouts of animals and body parts to create his works of art. His incorporation of objects is organized to suggest a level of perception along with a heightened visual experience. This gives me, the viewer, a sense of energy. The color perception that Fred uses gives a gravitational sensation. If you take a look at the heart of this piece you can immediately visualize the different elements that Fred incorporates into the piece. Artist Bettye Saar uses belittling and derogatory images of African Americans, which are now called black collectibles. It seeks to challenge racist stereotypes and myths. In Saar's assemblage “The Liberation of Aunt Jemima” she uses images of Aunt Jemima. Aunt Jemima was considered a housekeeper, who was used to sell commercially prepared pancake mixes. In the piece mentioned above, Saar uses three versions of Aunt Jemima to upend such images. The first image you would probably see is the larger image of the Jemima figure, this Jemima is holding a rifle, a pistol and a broom. A black powerful fist may not be seen at first glance, but as you look at the picture you may notice that it is something that you should not have missed. The next image is of Jemima holding a crying baby. In the background is an image of a lighter skinned Jemima, this image can be interpreted as a slimmer, more attractive and more marketable Jemima. Each viewer's interpretation of these two different pieces will be based on their own internal feelings. The reason I chose these two pieces is that I see them as total opposites. Each of these artists chooses to portray the image of a human-like object in two different ways. On the one hand there is Fred Tomaselli who uses different objects to express openness while Bettye Saar uses her artistic skills to express a fight for freedom. As these images defined how blacks were often perceived by whites and were often the source of how blacks saw themselves.
