Fast food chains have enjoyed unimaginable success in the last half of the 21st century, the fast food restaurant is in danger as society is increasingly concerned about both the effects on health of this type of food and the way it is produced. Unfortunately, people do not balance their diet with fruits and vegetables, causing a huge amount of health problems in today's world. The most common of these due to fast food are obesity, diabetes and heart disease. The problem with fast food lies in the types of fats they use and people's choices, and unfortunately, people won't make any changes to improve their health unless there are some guidelines or restrictions to help everyone. In order for our present and future society to enjoy better overall health, fast food restaurants should benefit from government intervention to reduce the serious health problems caused by fast foods by simply banning trans fats, visibly displaying the calorie content, and eliminating huge sizing options. When it comes to fats, trans fats are considered by some doctors to be the worst type of fat. Unlike other fats, trans fats – also called trans fatty acids – increase “bad” cholesterol (LDL) and lower “good” cholesterol (HDL). A high level of LDL cholesterol combined with a low level of HDL cholesterol increases the risk of heart disease, the leading cause of death in men and women” (Mayo Clinic Staff, 3). Fast food companies love using trans fats in food production because they help foods stay fresh longer, have a longer shelf life, and feel less greasy but much harder for the body to digest. Eating is not an option, but choosing the type of food we eat is and we can make a change by eliminating foods containing trans fats, providing information on calories and eliminate huge portions of food. The best choice would be to switch from junk food to more organic and fresh products from which we could benefit greatly. These regulations are not intended to limit our freedoms but to help us in the present and in the future and if nothing is done to stop obesity, how will fast food affect people in 20 years.
