“BYOD [Bring Your Own Device]…potentially allows school districts to cut IT budgets [there], perhaps helping the movement make inroads there, but the BYOD…represents a particularly dangerous approach for multiple reasons” (Geller, 2013). The BYOD philosophy is very intriguing to many people. In this article I will answer three important ethical questions regarding BYOD in the classroom. Please note that BYOD in the classroom refers to grades twelve and below. College-level students are expected to have these devices to complete schoolwork, and individual institutions and teachers are expected to govern such students respectively. Does BYOD create an unlevel playing field in the classroom? “The only way to ensure equitable educational experiences is for every student to have access to the same materials and learning opportunities. BYOD leaves all of this up to chance, and more affluent students continue to have an unfair advantage over their classmates. This is particularly problematic in a society characterized by growing economic inequality” (Stager, 2014). Unequal conditions will accompany the introduction of BYOD in the classroom, if the school allows it alone, more financially stable families will be able to provide tools for their children to use and benefit from. While other families who are not as financially stable cannot do so. There are alternatives, however If a school implements BYOD for grade levels that will truly benefit from the additional learning tools, it should also be prepared to purchase devices for students who cannot afford them. Those students, to avoid any daily humiliation, could then control the device at the beginning... middle of the paper... k Blog. [online] Doug-johnson.squarespace.com.
