Topic > Music Video Analysis: I Took A Pill In Ibiza - 717

"I Took a Pill in Ibiza" by Mike Posner is an extremely unusual and thought-provoking music video. The combination of the lyrics mixed with the costumes, the scenes and the real life of Mike Posner describes a compelling story of drug and substance addiction. However, there's more to make this video interesting than just the lyrics; the use of sets and types of clothing, especially the grotesque mask that Mike Posner wears in the video, helps keep the video interesting. In real life, Mike Posner took a pill in Ibiza, which is a music festival in Spain, because it was the “cool” or “popular” thing to do. Mike Posner wanted to show other singers and the people of Ibiza that he was cool. In the song he admits that the pills have really aged and changed. Since taking "the pill" at the beginning of the video, the main character of this music video always wears a strange mask with a deadpan expression. The mask is a huge, almost fish-like, pale-skinned, dazed, wide-eyed, open-mouthed, bizarre and almost disturbing depiction of Mike Posner's real face. This mask represents his displeasure at what he does. The character never reacts to any action. Over the course of the video his friends party, fight, get alcohol poisoning and Mike Posner even has some beautiful women who want to be with him. However, whatever happens in the video, Mike Posner is not amused one bit. The video is set in a club and the main character is simply "on the move" in his daily life. All his friends have a lot of fun with him at the party, but he can only sit, watch and nod. The character with the mask is there, isolated, unable to have fun, no matter what. This is closely tied to his real life when Mike Posner had some serious substance
