As shock waves rolled through the Columbine victims after the shooting, people wanted to direct their anger at someone or something. They looked for something or someone who had helped the killers carry out the destruction. Blame was initially placed on the Jeffco Sheriff's Department due to the department's few but critical errors. Many felt that the police took too long to gain control of the situation and reach the victims who had been killed. The time taken by the SWAT team led to many unnecessary deaths. “SWAT teams searched the building for over three hours, but the killers lay dead the entire time” (Cullen 83). Dave Sanders was shot minutes after the shooting began and survived for three hours. “The impression [Dave's family] was getting was that twelve victims had disappeared once the bullets had left the chambers, but Dave had held out for well over three hours” (138). Dave could have been saved. The police immediately defended themselves by explaining that, due to the risk of booby traps and other bombs, it was necessary to move calmly through the school....
