1. Saramago tells the story in the third person (omniscient) because he wants to show readers how each character has changed during the asylum. The author wants us to experience how blindness affected their mental and physical abilities. What the characters have experienced and what feelings change with each other, Saramago shows that the characters are also learning something along the way. Blindness is perhaps a lesson for these people. It's a lesson because it shows the horrible truth about how soon the whole system and the whole society will crumble if we lose even one of our senses. Furthermore, the author shows each character what he feels and what he has experienced so that he can later show that he becomes heartless in the end or actually show his true personality.2. The conventional punctuation shown has no effect on the novel because in the novel the author explains that this is the way we speak and the lack of quotation marks emphasizes the dialogue. The characters speak right away to show how they are scared and panicking during quarantine. This is revealed in a conversation where people are in a truly dire situation, with seemingly everyone speaking at the same time in panicked voices. There wasn't much dialogue because less dialogue you understand what they're going through instead of seeing what they do, you hear their voices all at once to make sure you hear what they did instead of visualizing it in your mind. Saramago does not identify the city where he was struck by the blindness epidemic nor on which street the first blind man was struck because he wants us to understand that this disease can happen anywhere, and to realize that these "names no longer mean anything". The author does not......middle of paper......This crudeness and violence was enough to give me a stomach ache repeatedly. This shows how society can change their emotional and physical behaviors when they lose one of the five senses. Throughout the narratives, the perspective assumes that the narrator has also become blind and is guided by the doctor's wife. To summarize, this novel influenced me by the way we should actually see the world, even the smallest details should be considered beauty, and the worldview should be more careful than discarded. OBJECT Blindfold: represents temporary blindness of the novel is not actually based on blindness. The novel uses blindness as a parable about society: blindness represents how they see things as they are. The author uses illness to piece together a story about human principles, disasters, and outcomes that happen in our society.
