Kafka ends the book by stating that Gregor's family has left the apartment, showing that the family has moved on without him. Gregor's transformation also resulted in a transformation of the family's lifestyle. Gregor's father, mother and sister found work to support the family. Kafka even mentions that Gregor's father, mother, and sister had jobs that were "extremely favorable and with particularly promising prospects", indicating that Gregor's family had a better lifestyle after Gregor's death than when Gregor worked in the agency. Gregor was a kind person, as he worked to repay his parents' debt instead of his family. However, Gregor's family seemed to forget that Gregor had provided money to support the family before turning into an insect. Gregor's family seemed not to appreciate Gregor's help after his death because now the family has to work, but they appreciated the freedoms they gained once Gregor died. Kafka states that the greatest improvement in the family's situation was the change of residence. The family appears to resent him for bringing home the income and making the decisions for the family, revealing that Gregor was in charge of the family and controlled every aspect of the family's lifestyle, as Gregor chose where the family lived. With Gregor's death, the family had the freedom to choose where to live. Gregor's
