Oppression - an unfortunate event that occurred in society as long as there were people to oppress. The history of the world, also understood as the history of oppression, is simply a series of events that occurred due to the exploitation of people. In most cases oppression occurs because a government feels unstable and wishes to remain in power. When a government oppresses its people, the oppressed tend to try to rebel. During World War I, the Russians rebelled against their government and created a communist society. In the novel, 1984, Winston and Julia sought a revolution, but the revolution seemed unthinkable due to the power of Big Brother. In A Tale of Two Cities, the oppressed citizens rebelled against the government and the aristocracy. In the case of World War II, the Jews became incapable of making a revolution because they were cut off to focus only on survival. Oppression is at the root of all the problems people faced in those events and in those books. In World War I, the Russians rebelled against their tsar and created a communist country. Tsar Nicholas II caused some of the most disastrous and bloodiest wars Russia had ever seen, so people wanted him out. I learned that they were successful because the revolutionaries sought a common goal, the communist manifesto. Although the new communist reign seemed positive for a while, eventually some members of society managed to get to the top of the pyramid, denying the communist manifesto. People will permanently have that desire and craving for power and status, just because that is ingrained in human nature. Russian communist society may have successfully fought a revolution brought about by the tsar, but in the end equality did not grow into an… effort to survive until the next meal, abandoning any possible thoughts of starting a revolution. I learned how far people will go to survive. The Jews literally lived on the brink of death every day they remained in the camps, yet somehow they managed to survive. People fought their families for food. This shows that if someone gets stuck in a situation where the odds are in favor of death, that person will do anything to get out of it. When a government oppresses its people, the oppressed tend to try to rebel. Oppression has evolved throughout our history and literature, and through World War I, World War II, 1984, and A Tale of Two Cities, we see different types of revolutions against that oppression. Some may have failed, but the knowledge we have learned from them remains infinite.
