Advocacy in Action The Advocacy in action document is to examine various nursing staffing issues in hospital and the impact of this issue on patient care and satisfaction. The role and mission of every nurse is to care for a patient and support a safe and healthy work environment. It is very important that all nurses work together, successfully supporting nurses and the profession to achieve a safer working environment. My role in this article is to advocate for improvement by practicing safely in the hospital to improve patient satisfaction and reduce nurse burnout. The nursing profession is becoming very challenging for nurses nationwide when the healthcare system is constantly changing. The issue of nurse staffing is becoming a growing global problem in hospitals and long-term care facilities. Patient acuity in hospital is growing rapidly, patient acuity determines the level of care a patient needs, the higher the acuity, the more care needed or required. Increased severity results in high demand for nursing care which in turn results in increased workload, burnout, and job dissatisfaction. There is an alarming concern about the shortage and retention of nurses in our hospitals nationwide, which could seriously compromise overall patient outcomes. The hospital's skill mix required nurse assistants to care for patients, which puts registered nurses in the supervisory role. The nursing assistant provides more bedside care that the professional nurse should be responsible for when patients now require the attention of a professional nurse at the bedside. The skill mix created a greater supervisory role for nurse practitioners, moving them away from the bedside nursing care patients needed. Nurses will feature... middle of paper... nurses in hospitals across the state of Maryland, focusing on training nurses through the Nurse Education Program to expand the pool of nurses in the state of Maryland. This initiative will also increase the capacity of nursing programs in the state of Maryland. Becoming an active member of the American Nurse Association and a member of the HSCRC to support advocacy for the needs of nurses will be the first step forward. My mission will be to address the difficulties that nurses are facing in my facility regarding staffing issues on each unit. The importance of improving patient safety and outcomes, nurse burnout and job dissatisfaction. Joining this organization to support nurses and be the voice is an essential role in advocacy. It is necessary to put an end to this vicious cycle which, for decades, has been becoming a serious problem in the healthcare sector across the nation.
