Topic > The Characteristics of Poetry in Emerson's The Poet

Such critics of poetry can be defined as fascist or oppressive governments that seek to confine the minds of its citizens; because indifference is something that a particular government fears and persecutes widely. Poetry can make a difference, sometimes it is even believed that the very beginning of wars may be based on articulated words found only in poetry. The importance of poetry can be described in a single quote: “Poetry is language in its most distilled and powerful form.” – Rita Colomba. The language of poetry can be this, in demonstrating that it is truly an extraordinary way to amplify the opinions and the very thoughts that we think. Emerson also quotes, "his speech is thunder, his thought is law, and his words are as universally intelligible as plants and animals." (22). Poets have the power to change the world, which is why we must appreciate the poet and all that he, or they in general, can bring.
