I went to visit a solo musician named Jay Bowcott, a Calgarian who moved to Medicine Hat about ten years ago with his family. The show was at Mikey's Juke Joint here in the Beltline in Calgary. Mikey's is a small venue modeled after a 1930s barrique, complete with rough-hewn wood floors, aged copper countertops, and a matching copper bar. The concert was not officially titled “Constant Rain” although it was part of a small tour to promote Jay's recently released album. The show was scheduled to start on November 22nd at 9pm, a short sound check took place at 8.30pm. At 8:55 the first five chords of Tom Petty's signature hit, Free Fallin', sounded, only this version had a folk twist. Jay would open with a series of his own renditions of some of the biggest hits of the last fifty years, which had fascinated me. thinking it was going to be a long night. I'm very rarely a fan of covers, let alone covers of originals I've listened to hundreds of times. I began frantically searching for my server because I intended to launch a pre-emptive attack on the pain I was about to endure....
