Statement: Creating a gender-just classroom is extremely important to me, as well as to our society. Attending school in Georgia for most of my education and finishing high school in Michigan opened my eyes to many differences within the education systems of both states. I believe that because our state holds true to the traditions of football, big boys and good guys, it is even more important for us to instill the belief of gender equality in our youth. When I am a teacher, I will work tirelessly to ensure that all of my students are treated equally and understand that this is how others should be treated in their lives. Evidence: There are many things that can be done in the classroom to counteract gender bias. I plan to self-evaluate often and make sure I incorporate these ideas into my classroom throughout my career. • The easiest thing to check out in my classroom should be me, however this requires me to look closely often. I will have to examine my thoughts, my beliefs, my actions and, above all, my character. I need to make sure I treat all students fairly and don't hinder anyone's success. • I will praise and criticize all students fairly and equitably. Praise and criticism will still be given only when deserved, but I will keep a tally sheet to ensure I praise boys and girls in the same way and in the same amount. • When I choose additional texts for my lesson, I will do a thorough review of each to ensure they are gender biased. If the texts I need to use are biased, I will address the biases with my students. I will teach them about forms of prejudice, from stereotypes to cosmetic prejudices. (Page 120)• When guest speakers are brought into class, I will make sure students are......middle of the paper......and on their instruction. Opinion: Maintaining a gender-equitable classroom is not always an easy task, but it is vital to the success of students, the community, and me as a teacher. I know I have a difficult road ahead of me, although I don't consider myself a prejudicial person. I feel like each of these ideas will help me on my journey, and most importantly, I am aware that there is still a lot to learn. I will continue to read and develop professionally in gender equality. (Pg121) I will also suggest gender bias workshops at my school. I think this topic is especially important in Georgia, and throughout the South, where our traditions are so steeped in sexism. Regardless of how teachers perceive their classrooms, I believe everyone could use help in this area. It is our duty to create the best possible learning environment for our students.
