Topic > The Importance of Being a Secondary School Counselor

High school is the second phase of education that serves as a transition period from childhood to young adulthood, in-depth self-discovery and growth, as well as Disappointment at this critical stage of a young person's life requires support and guidance to achieve optimal success. I have absolute faith in the potential of all people's abilities to take them beyond society's expectations, especially young adults. My passion for education as a solution to the obstacles many teenagers face is the basis of my desire to be an influential role model in the lives of high school students. I believe I have the qualities needed to be part of the education family and achieve the goals of that career. The role of secondary school counselors, simply put, is to be an advocate for students. Education A secondary school counselor is a professional occupation that requires extensive education, training, and certifications to practice. To become a secondary school counselor in the state of Colorado I must receive a K-12 school counselor license (American School Counselor Association [ASCA], 2014). Educationally, you are required to have at least a master's degree in school counseling, assuming you have already earned a bachelor's degree (ASCA, 2014). I am in the process of earning my bachelor's degree in counseling psychology here at CMU and plan to attend graduate school in Colorado. Adam's State College, Argosy University Denver, and Colorado State University all offer Master's programs in counselor education or school counseling (ASCA, 2014). I will most likely attend CSU's graduate program due to its location and accreditation. Counseling requires a great deal of experience, including the following: ...... half of the paper ...... cumulative costs to become a school counselor amount to an estimated total of $45,000, made up of the following : $30,000 of which is from my education at CMU and $15,000 from the graduate program I will be attending. With these figures and my financial experience in mind, I believe it is possible for me to become a secondary school counselor. The ASCA (2014) reported, “Secondary school counselors are professional educators with a mental health perspective who understand and respond to the challenging issues presented by today's diverse student population. Secondary school counselors…are an integral part of the overall educational program. They provide proactive leadership…and services to help the student achieve success in school” (para. 3). I am passionate that education is the key to success and I cannot imagine a better career who advise students during their transition into young adulthood.
