Quadriplegia is caused by an injury to the spinal cord and causes paralysis of the entire body below the neck. In the novel Me Before You, by Jojo Moyes, Will Traynor suffers from quadriplegia after an accident that changes his life immensely. Will struggles with his new life and fails to see the point in continuing his life. Many people develop depression when they face a sudden life-changing event that has an extreme and negative impact on their lives. Currently, the number of accommodations for people suffering from a long-term illness, including victims of quadriplegia, is increasing. The underlying repercussions of quadriplegia, caused by the limiting lifestyle it triggers, significantly change many lives and leave a large number of quadriplegics with uncertainty about life. The emotional, psychological and physical boundaries of the novel Me Before You connect to real and existing problems in today's society. In Me Before You, Will Traynor experiences a big change when he is diagnosed with quadriplegia for the rest of his life. Will is hit by a car on his way home from work and becomes a quadriplegic. He attempts to kill himself, but his mother stops him and hires Louisa Clark in an attempt to assist Will. Louisa is a carer who watches over Will and convinces him that life is worth living. She tries to change his mind throughout the novel, but he continues to aspire to go to Dignitas, a place in Switzerland that medically assists people who wish to commit suicide. When Will inherits quadriplegia, his life consequently changes from wanting to live to wanting to die. He believes he has reasonable grounds for taking his own life. Once someone is diagnosed with quadriplegia, they no longer have the same control over… middle of paper… c changes. Some people suffer from depression while others learn to adapt to their new lifestyle. With the creation of Me Before You, Jojo Moyes revealed a novel containing a wide range of border crossings. Will changed physically after being hit by a car and encountered many emotional conflicts with his new life. Louisa resisted a psychological change, accepting that Will wanted to kill himself. Aside from the obvious emotional boundary crossings that come with it, quadriplegia has changed today's general public for the better. The community is more informed, active and aware of issues surrounding quadriplegia and other long-term disabilities. In the novel, Louisa embodies the general public as she actively researches while assisting Will on his quadriplegic journey. The novel Me Before You, by Jojo Moyes, would just be a great addition to a resume that respects border crossings.
