Liberals value protecting and helping those who cannot for themselves, promote fairness, such as cultivating and strengthening oneself to help others. Projecting this to the national level, we see how liberals believe it is the government's duty to alleviate social ills and protect individual civil liberties and human rights. This serves as the basis for the idea that the role of government should be to provide people with the freedom needed to pursue their goals
