Topic > The Effects of Smoking on the Human Body - 1798

All over the world people smoke, cigarette after cigarette, pack after pack, killing themselves and those around them one puff at a time. Smoking tobacco, regardless of how it is done, is a negligent act that damages nearly every organ and system in the human body. A single cigarette contains around 600 ingredients and produces over 7,000 chemicals over the time it is lit. Among these chemicals, countless substances are poisonous and at least sixty-nine of them are linked to cancer (“American Lung Association”). More than sixteen million people are said to be living with a disease caused by smoking. The list of diseases goes on and on, from eye diseases to tuberculosis, and many of them lead to death. Every year almost six million people die from causes related to tobacco use. It is proven that smoking alone is responsible for around 480,000 deaths, to simplify it is around 1,300 every day. Just some of the chemicals that make up a cigarette include acetone, found in enamel, arsenic, found in rat poisoning, benzene, found in rubbery concrete, and they also include the well-known and highly addictive stimulant, nicotine found as an insecticide. Every day people inhale all these deadly ingredients and chemicals without knowing the effects they have on their bodies or even how they affect the people around them. As if it didn't have enough negative consequences, smoking is a major cause of cancer. It is also the most preventable form of cancer. It causes at least fourteen different types of cancer including lung, which is the most common, esophagus, mouth, larynx, throat, kidney, bladder, liver and many others. By damaging a person's DNA, including the key g...... middle of paper ...... and weight because it also depresses the appetite, it can cause someone to not want to eat, resulting in no enough nutrients for the body needs. Furthermore, if someone started smoking, just to lose weight, they would have many other things to worry about, such as disease and even death. This is an unhealthy habit that could lead to getting seriously ill from something that could be solved in a better and more efficient way. Smoking is harmful to a person, affecting both mental and physical health. The CDC states that smoking is the leading cause of illness and most preventable death. If quitting smoking can prevent disease and prolong a person's life, then quitting is the only right option. It's understandable that quitting smoking isn't easy, just as quitting any addiction is. However, it is necessary to do so, to contribute more to limiting the diseases and lives that this entails every day.
