This becomes a turning point for Bromden, as he reaffirms himself as a functioning human being. This is her first attempt to revolt against Nurse Ratched's control over her patients. One of the main motifs of the story is the importance of rational decision making. It is power that determines one's position as a noetic human being. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest in Judgment centers on the rift between McMurphy, who represents the ability to decide, and Nurse Ratched, who does not allow people to make decisions for themselves. When Bromden realizes his need for rationality he begins to protest against Nurse Ratched. His hallucinations of the fog begin to fade as his ability to make his own decisions evolves. He in turn becomes vulnerable as he loses the fog in exchange for his right to do so
