During May of the year 1587, 114 people returned to America, with more or less the same goals: to become rich, because they were unemployed, or for the freedom to exercise their religion. They saw this as an opportunity to start and lead a new life. This second attempt to found a colony, however, seemed destined to succeed. Later that same year, John White, an artist who would soon become governor of Roanoke, arrived in Roanoke with other settlers. John White's granddaughter, Virginia Dare, is born, the first child born in the New World. Despite the strength of the settlement, the colonists needed supplies. John White was reluctant to leave his family, but still took two ships back to England. He didn't know much about what he was about to encounter. John White arrived safely in England, picked up supplies, then set out on his way back to the colony, but was attacked by French pirates. He was forced to turn back and refuel once again.
