In the Middle Ages you were born into a class of people in which you remained throughout your life. The lives of girls and women depended on their wealth and where they lived. In the Middle Ages, girls and women had fewer opportunities than men. Women could not have a job outside the home, could marry without parental consent, and could not own a business even if they asked the king, lord, or nobleman to do so. In the Middle Ages, women could not inherit any land from their parents if their male brothers were still alive. Weather women lived in a city or village that didn't change what they had to do. If you were a woman living in a village in the Middle Ages you had to do most of the work men did on the land, but they were paid less. In medieval cities women thought it was difficult to develop crafts, so most of the work they completed had to do with making clothes. As you can see, the women had a difficult life. Romantic love in the Middle Ages was not as important in today's society. The marriage was always organized by the women's parents, whether they were nobles or peasants. Marriage ceremonies depended on the wealth of the bride and groom. Although many women became pregnant during marriage, having children was dangerous because some people were poor and could not afford child care. Noble women came from a rich, powerful family with large amounts of land. Noble women lived under the control of their father rather than their husband. Noble women followed a schedule from their lord that explained their daily routines. Noble women had many jobs such as supervising cooks and servants, ordering supplies, and making sure bills were paid on time. Blue robes were widely worn during the Middle Ages because they were a symbol of loyalty and red jasper was for love. During wedding ceremonies people normally dressed alike to protect couples from bad things. This shows that women had a very hard life because they were always busy working and had no say in many things in their lives. In the Middle Ages there were marriage laws that do not exist in today's society and the laws had to be followed. Marriage in the Middle Ages was very different. The way women in the Middle Ages depended on whether you were rich or poor and where you were from.
