Topic > Street Education Analysis by Jay Z - 872

Merriam Webster's dictionary defines education as “the action or process of teaching someone, especially in a school, college, or university.” In this definition, the word “especially” is used to include the school environment for the “standard way of learning,” but education can be “a process of teaching someone.” An educated person is someone who can adapt to whatever life has in store. Whether at school or on the street, people can still be educated by the music they listen to and the events of life. Jay Z's life is a great example of what it means to get a street education. He used his "street education" to become what he is today, a successful artist that many people look up to and admire for his ability. He talks about him as "two Jay Zs". He learns what kind of songs to release from the response of his fans. In an article, “Jay Z Beat the System” says “It's like life – sometimes you just want to 'rock' in the club; other times you just want to get real and do something profound. Use this life scenario to ensure you have a good balance of music for a party to "improvise" to and also to give them something to think about. His songs, "Big Pimpin" and "I Just Wanna Love You" are examples of how Jay Z can switch from his 'wild side' to his more sensitive side to get the attention of his fans. Jay Z talks about how "downplaying a record actually forces an artist to be smarter." This helps the artist “balance, create authenticity and accessibility.” His definition for "downplaying" a song is "a song that appeals to a lower common denominator: a great chorus, a great beat, and easy-to-follow lyrics." An example he gives, as a “muted” song is one of his biggest “hits,” Empire State of. Over the years he learns to collaborate with other artists who may not have his musical style, which gives him a higher level of respect. by his fans and the people he collaborates with. He knows how to share the stage and still be himself. Sharing the stage also helps a person grow in their craft. Each performance is a different learning experience that an artist can hold on to and build upon. Jay Z tells Wilson, in “The Truth” interview, that he doesn't have a big ego that would stop him from pursuing further collaborations. Sometimes an artist may think too highly of himself to let the process of learning cooperation take place. With a closed mind, new information cannot get through and so learning is interrupted
