Defiance is a 2008 American docudrama film starring Daniel Craig and directed by Edward Zwick. The plot takes place in Western Europe and sees Tuvia Bielski and her brothers lead a Jewish partisan group against Nazi forces in the fight for their lives. The group saved more than 1,200 Jews from Nazi persecution and would be one of the most successful Jewish resistance groups during World War II. The film is well made and involves multiple elements and a high dose of action and adrenaline. Defiance generally did well in theaters and was well approved by critics; and WELL shows some of the events of the Holocaust. The harsh winter brings disease, hunger, betrayal and constant hiding, later the group learns of a heavy German attack coming. This leads to the Soviets abandoning the pact and evacuating their camps as German dive bombers strike. Asael and Sofiya stay behind to delay the assault while the rest of the group flees. Their efforts fail and only Asael and Sofiya survive the delayed defense. Unfortunately the group finds itself crossing an impassable swamp and the Nazi forces are approaching. Although the group manages to overcome the swamp, they are immediately attacked by German infantry and a tank. Tuvia is able to flank the tankTuvia is able to flank the Nazi tank with an MG34 machine gun and uses the tank on the Nazi forces; Isaac is shot and killed while trying to throw a grenade which explodes in his hand. The escape seems grim for the group until Zus returns with some Soviet partisans who abandoned the Soviets; they immediately attack the German forces from the rear and the German forces are quickly overwhelmed. The film ends with the survivors fleeing into the forest and stating that "they lived in the forest for two more years,...... middle of paper..."
