“She had no clothes, no jewels, nothing. And he loved nothing more than this. She felt like she was made for that. She would have loved to be liked, to be envied, to be charming, to be sought after. (Maupassant). All these things could only be imagined in his mind. The luxurious life was never a reality for her, but only a dream that she badly wanted to come true. As a result, this jealous attitude caused her to fall into depression. Maupassant used a strange word “sphinx”. The word is most commonly used to describe things that are difficult to understand, but the author used it to describe someone eating exotic food. Maupassant writes: “...and he thought of delicious dishes served on marvelous plates and of the whispered gallantries that are listened to with a sphinx's gaze. The plot is very believable, because this very story can happen today. People all over the world have lost goods containing a high price tag. For example, a woman put her mother's ring in a hat when she decided to swim. When he returned to shore, he didn't notice the ring was missing from his hat until he was walking home.
