By including bilingual education there is a higher rate that students who are emergent bilinguals will stay in school because their self-esteem is not as low as if they were in one class only English classroom. Viewing bilingualism as an advantage rather than a shortcoming would have a positive impact on emergent bilingual students and would potentially be used as a resource for the whole class. Those in favor of English-only education argue that bilingual education is not necessary because students will “learn” English when they attend school. The idea that English comes naturally to emerging bilinguals by throwing them into an English classroom is inaccurate.
