Maurita Cornelis Escher, also known as MC Escher, was born to George Arnold Escher and Sarah Gleichman on June 17, 1898 in the Dutch province of Friesland in Leeuwarden, the Netherlands. MC Escher was the youngest of three children. In 1903, Escher began studying carpentry and piano until the age of thirteen. In 1912 Escher began secondary school in the small town of Arnhem. He worked for carpenters and carpenters. This became very useful in his future work with prints and woodcuts. It also helped boost Escher's self-confidence. Escher had very low grades, but was very interested in drawing. His teacher became interested in his ability to draw and taught him to make linocuts. Escher failed his final exams and never graduated. He was a poor student in math and science. The only classes he enjoyed were art. In 1918 Escher attended the Technical College in Delft.
