Topic > Truman Capote: The Time of Murder - 1096

For decades there have been people who were racist and others who felt better because of the color of their skin. In Truman Capote's book In Cold Blood these characteristics are captured; However, since then his editorial ideals have changed. Some believed that two murderers were not given a truly fair trial. There was also a dispute between the system and whether the murderers should be sentenced to death. This book, while effective in style, could have used less detail. Capote presents alternating perspectives, the four members of the Clutter family Nancy, Kenyon, Mrs. Clutter, and Mr. Clutter, who are victims, and the two murderers, Dick Hickock and Perry Smith. These different perspectives allow the reader to relive each side of the story, such as “Good grief, Kenyon” (Capete 17). Then the next part begins “Dick drove a black 1949 Chevrolet sedan” (Capete 22). Alternating views help you control each section of thoughts and help prevent the reader from misinterpreting them. I found it easier to read since so many characters were involved. Using this perspective the reader picks up the pieces of the puzzle that led to a terrible murder of the Clutter family. Criminals have a sort of cult of personality. Perry is a school dropout and is a loner while Dick has children and has been married twice The whole story Perry seems to appeal to the readers' emotions since he has no family. Capote is partially biased against Smith because to Friends Truman Capote provides the reader with a detailed chronicle of Perry Smith and Dick Hickock Smith's childhood was problematic due to years of abuse. Perry witnessed his father's abuse of his mother; as a result, his parents divorced. His adulthood has given him the opportunity to avenge the... middle of paper... which the prosecution is trying to make an example of. Dick and Perry. The trial seems unbalanced because these men are depicted as guilty until proven innocent. There have been a few cases like this in history, although the prosecution had more evidence than this latest case. An example includes the OJ Simpson trial, only he was found innocent because his lawyers had an effective defense strategy. However, since defendants Dick and Perry were being tried in a small town, the system was not fair. Truman Capote dedicated his time to the making of In Cold Blood and it's evident. Even though it has been published for almost fifty years, this book remains popular today. Therefore, if this book had been published today, there would likely be a backlash as the language can be extreme at times. Works Cited Capote, Truman. In cold blood. New York: Modern Library, 1965.
