As he mourns for his mother, Tiresias appears and begins drinking blood like the other shadows. Tiresias warns Odysseus not to eat Helios' cattle and that he alone will return to Ithaca alive and must then fight the suitors pursuing his wife and then pray to Poseidon to live a long and happy life and die peacefully. Ulysses talks to the ghost of his mother who is unable to hug him but tries three times. While taking a break from recounting his journey, Queen Arete decides that when Odysseus leaves he will have to leave with a bag of treasures and the king asks him if he has seen any Trojan friends in the underworld. Odysseus continues his tale and tells how he met Agamemnon as a shadow and learns of his newfound hatred towards all women, except Penelope for her constant loyalty to Odysseus. Odysseus then meets other spirits such as Achilles, who is quite unhappy to be dead and says he would rather be a poor peasant, and Ajax who killed himself for not obtaining Achilles' weapons during the Trojan War. Odysseus and his crew finally depart as more and more shadows come to drink the
