In ancient Greece people valued democracy, wealth, entertainment, knowledge and many other things, however what is also important is what the ancient Greeks clearly they didn't appreciate. Among many things, people, perhaps one of the most undervalued commodities in Greece, include women and slaves. There are also many other things that the Greeks do not seem to give importance to, one of which is anti-corruption measures. Greeks seem to devote most of their time and effort to society in many different ways, from gymnastics to theatrical performances, even their houses are built specifically for social events. These values or, more importantly, the lack of value regarding slaves, women and, above all, good governance, most likely contributed to the downfall of their civilization. Women in Ancient Greece are an interesting subject and only so much is known about the exact daily lives of them, however, from what remains of documents it would appear that they were kept at a relatively low level in the social hierarchy. Even in Pericles' Funeral Speech which seems to be an almost utopian discretion of aspects of Greek life Pericles himself states that “Great will be your glory in not failing in your natural character; and the greatest will be the one who will be talked about least among men, both for better and for worse. Pericles says that older women should be the ones who go unnoticed but still perform tasks without attracting men's attention. In addition to this, the great philosopher Aristotle also attacks Greek women by simply stating that "[female souls are] inactive." With this simple statement Aristotle makes it seem like women are somehow broken and can never live up to the same standards as men. . Xenophon, The Economist also digresses on... middle of paper... the guardians of the nation must be, among other things, well educated and almost isolated from civil life in order to better govern the nation. Plato also implies that women can be as wise as men if they receive the same education and can even become guardians if they display the appropriate characteristics. This shows that some Greeks believed that with education and willpower anyone could rise in the social hierarchy. Athenians display interesting but not unusual values, directed primarily at their own personal gain. Mostly Greeks valued wealth, knowledge and society and with these values they end up placing little value on women and slaves who are almost at the same level when it comes to quality of life. The Greeks' narrow-mindedness regarding corruption and overconfidence in democracy most likely led to the fall of their empire.
