The impact that new media has on society is evident through various community-based forums, user-oriented video hosting websites, and user-run blogs. People are turning away from more traditional forms of information and turning to using new media technologies as a source of reliable information. The increase in the use of new media plays a fundamental role in shaping society in this century. The evolution of social media sites has produced a negative result. Social networking sites like MySpace and Facebook have become a regular occurrence on which to find associates or colleagues. An important transition from traditional forms of information to new media is the creation of video hosting websites such as YouTube. These video hosting websites have caused an increase in regular people reporting on major events, and as a result, have caused a wave of unreliable information for viewers. Viewers overlook more traditional forms of information reported by real journalists and receive fictional rather than factual information. The advancement of new media is harmful to society in every way. First, with the advancement of today's society, the source of information has changed from more traditional sources to being received from new media sources such as the Internet or other often unreliable sources. The advancement of technology has caused the emergence of a new source of information which has caused implications for society. "Our cell phones are not simply telecommunications devices, they also allow us to play games, download information from the Internet, take and send photographs or text messages." (Jenkins 465). The advancement of new media has changed the way society receives, interprets and responds to information. Today's society r... middle of paper... we will not share it. For example, “intimacies that were once whispered into the telephone are now brazenly announced in cell phones as loud conversations in public places. The once sealed diaries are now called blogs and published daily. (Williams 473). As a result, new media of the future will play a major role in providing information as it occurs. People will engage in fierce competition to cover a story first. Information will quickly spread like wildfire. Events will be covered as they occur and broadcast immediately to other parts of the world. Gone are the days when journalists were the experts on an event. The information will be covered by ordinary people for people in society to understand. News will become more opinionated. Overall, the world will become a place where people resort to doing anything for a chance at instant fame.
