What is globalization? Globalization is defined by our Perspectives on Globalization textbooks as the process that is making the world increasingly interdependent economically, socially, politically and technologically, however this doesn't really give us great insight into whether this process is beneficial or harmful to society, simply gives us a blunt definition of what globalization is. Although there are divergent opinions on this controversial topic, with a general consensus in favor of globalization as a positive factor in society, however, several citizens believe that globalization is a negative force in our world due to its rather capitalist outlook towards issues such as famine and poverty. Even though the benefits of globalization are amazing, is it really worth sacrificing our morals for that extra dollar? The answer, surely, is no. For many, the main problem behind the idea of globalization is that the benefits of this process apply only to the privileged few who control the corporate side of multinational corporations, and that these benefits are not shared among everyone. aspects of these companies. A prime example of this crime would be the multi-billion dollar American department store corporation known as Wal-Mart, which is well known for not returning money to the communities where its stores are located. It has been observed, in several cases, that when a Wal-Mart store opens in a city people visit it because of its low prices. As a result of these actions, the local economy collapses and poverty and famine become rampant. This in turn leads to a greater reliance on social programs, which are funded by the government, resulting in increased taxes that cause those affected to become… half paper… a real disservice to society. “Globalisation, as rich people like us define it, is a very beautiful thing... we talk about the Internet, we talk about mobile phones and we talk about computers. This does not concern two-thirds of the world's population." This quote from US President Jimmy Carter perfectly describes what globalization does; he takes what is useful in the world and gives it to the select few who obtained it through unjust means. Whether it is the exploitation of workers, the imperialist policies of the past or the capitalist mentality of this terrible process, globalization is undoubtedly a negative force in our society and is worth none of the benefits afforded to the third of us that globalization gives thanks . Hopefully one day the rest of the world will see it, but maybe that's just wishful thinking.
