The grandmother is no better than her son or her family. First of all, Grandma is pretty racist. When a black boy greets them, June Star comments that he "has no pants on." (O'Connor 358). Grandma does not correct her, but instead suggests that she "probably didn't have any" ( O'Connor 358) However, Grandma tries to instill good character in her grandchildren in other ways. He scolds them and even hissed "you're not ashamed" after June Star was very rude to Red Sam's wife. (O'Connor 360). However, this correct behavior seems to stem from a need to be self-righteous rather than a true need to raise her grandchildren. His hypocritical nature is shown most when he asks the Misfit, "do you ever pray?" (O'Connor 365). She tells the Misfit that she should pray, but she never prays once when she and her family are in danger. Not only does the hypocritical grandmother not pray, but she doesn't even bother to ask for the lives of her family members to be spared. However, she pleads with herself and says “You have good blood! I know you wouldn't shoot a woman!”(O'Connor 366) In his plea, it is evident that he is trying to appeal to the Misfit's good nature. However, the commentary seems to be that he has none, and that the man is actually no good at it
