The awareness that their parents are not perfect and very often point out their defects. Adolescents tend to look for new adults, who are not as flawed as their parents, to confide in. These new confidants are often adults to look up to or to fill the teen's need for a "hero." Relationships with adults outside the family tend to broaden the experiences of the average adolescent. This exposes them to new and unfamiliar situations and lifestyles, which can be scary during this middle adolescent age. Teens will put their feelings and thoughts in a journal or diary. Teens often turn to family and value their parents as best friends, as long as there is mutual respect.
