Through the use of numerous literary techniques in his poems, Robert Frost continues to engage audiences in the paradigms of everyday life. By writing about everyday life he was able to layer the key meaning of his poetry with extended metaphors. Robert Frost's poems are multifaceted, which leads the reader with endless possibilities for analysis and ultimately possesses a greater connection with each poem. Most of his works are mostly autobiographical and include two of his great poems Mending Wall and Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening along with The Road Not Taken. The Road Not Taken brings to the fore the expansive idea of choices and decisions in life, through the extensive use of literary techniques. In life we come across forks in the road and must determine which path to take. The path the character is walking on splits into two directions, which is evident through the use of metaphor in “Two Diverging Roads in a Yellow Forest” we can identify that this is not only the forest but also represents life decisions . This line also establishes the setting of the poem as the speaker refers to the forest as yellow, we can conclude that it is autumn. The metaphorical meaning of this poem set in the fall is that the speaker makes a choice in the fall of his life as he begins to age. The description of the road “And I looked as far down as I could, where it bent into the undergrowth” is a metaphor for the future as it shows the speaker foreshadowing and imagining where this path would take him in life until it became clear. After looking into it, he changed his mind and opted for a different future which he chose to take the path because he “wanted wear and tear”. The rhyming scheme ABAAB gives a sense...... middle of paper ......y of his decisions and commitments that are pressing on him. Literary elements such as imagery, personification, denotative word meanings help the reader decipher the poem and examine the metaphorical meaning within the poem. For example, stopping in the woods on a snowy evening means taking a sleigh ride through the woods, but can metaphorically speak to the threat of death in the changing seasons and the traditional expectations of duty. The texts studied engage the audience in the paradigms of everyday life through the use of literary techniques that show a deeper metaphorical meaning than poetry, this is evident in all three poems Stop by the Woods on a Snowy Evening, Mending Walls and The Road Not Taken. Robert Frost creatively incorporated metaphor leaving the audience with a different understanding of the poems than all symposiums on everyday life.
